Wonderful & important info Unicorn. Also stay away from the pesticides, try gardening organically. Bees are extremely important, we need our pollinators. Good job Unicorn, keep posting these sites, I know I appreciate them.

I'm doing my part for the bees, but the hummingbirds are getting tired of not being able to get to the feeder! Wife is a little upset too, she doesn't like bees.

I also read somewhere about the honeybee populations dropping. We've been planting for the bees and hummers (its amusing to watch a hummingbird swordfight with a bee over the feeder!)

This past month we've had an overabundance of honeybees.....if I go outside with a soft drink I'm fighting a swarm over it within minutes! I guess the bees are migrating south and Texas is one of their resting spots. It's good to see so many bees here...I just have to remember to use a cup with a lid when I'm outside (have you ever drank a bee?!? Eeeew!) I'm glad the little guys aren't very prone to sting!

I'm thinking about moving the bird/bee attracting flowerbeds to the outer perimeters of the yard, then maybe the bees will leave the hummer feeders near the house alone.

I never swallowed a bee, but close. One day I swallowed a Japanese beetle while driving my old work van. It scratched something awful going down the hatchet. I started coughing and gagging so I pulled over before having an accident having almost rear ended the guy in front of me. I started to throw up so I got out of the car and leaned over to do my duty, the van started rolling towards me and the ditch, I jumped out of the way still gagging, jumped in the van, stepped on the brake before I ditched the van. Got out and resumed where I left off. Some days! How was I going to explain how I ran myself over with my own van to the hubby and Ambulance guys?

We have lots of bees here in Central texas, some killer bees but I have never had an experience of them. We do not have a lot of agriculture in our rough hills so there isn't a lot of GMO pollen drift or pesticides here. My native Evergreen Sumacs (Rus virens) just bloomed everywhere on my land and it was buzzing all over the place. When my white datura blooms , the bees go so crazy over them, I think that they are getting very high on the psychotropic effects of the flowers. Their buzzing is strangely hectic and the flowers shake violently. On the nights that the hive hits the Datura with a vengeance, they can destroy the flowers before they open. They leave and won't be back for a week. I picture the bees all hung over in their hive talking about "where was that bush?" and not remembering the way back.

The site you sent out had a June or July deadline. I know, I can be irritating. I am always raining on my son's plans by bringing up details.

Geez, aren't Japanese Beetles pretty big?!? Was he tasty??? I'll stick to swallowing bees, thank you. Glad you didn't run yourself over with the van ....I had a similar incident in a van once trying to get away from a big spider that dropped down on me!!

Fortunately, we've never had an encouner with the killer bees either, although there's supposed to be some around here. Your bees sound like some crazy partying dudes!

I was drinking an open cup of ice tea while driving. He was small enough to go down part way and big enough to cause a heck of a disturbance. Central Texas Japanese beetles are smaller than the ones I remember up north and they come out in mass in April. They make the crown of my oak trees buzz at night for a week. The first time I heard them, it freaked me out. I had moved out to where the tree canopy was much lower to the ground, than in town and I could here them. Now they are part of my internal clock of seasons. I sit out and listen to them buzz in the night time.

It seems that we get things in mass when we get them. The Oak leaf Rollers ( another name for country western band) come out as small caterpillars and come hanging off the trees swinging and dangling every spring. Do you have them in Tyler? A couple of years there were so many That all the live oak trees lost their leaves for miles around. I went and got some tricagama (sp?) wasp eggs and hung them around the tree trunks for the next year. We had so much caterpillar poop on my deck we had to sweep it off and empty the chair before my daily meditation. one day , during meditation, my mantra became "sh!t happens". I couldn't stop it from going through my mind over and over and over until "this to shall pass" brought me peace and quiet.. and all I had was my breathing. When they became moths our screens were totally covered in moths trying to get in. It was a bit threatening to my husband. The next year my wasps had done their job eating up all the eggs. My neighbor who had sprayed was overun again. They have moved on as a whole, Thank God. We just get a few now. My wasp have spread to the neighbors.
