Everyone has to have this plant!

Rosa chinensis 'viridaflora' or better known as the Green Rose was discovered in China in 1789 and has been a novelty in American gardens for at least a century. I first saw it in the gardens at Hershey PA. The truth about this plant is that is is genetically defective and cannot produce petals so what you see are the flower shaped cluster of sepals, which of course are green. I grew it successfully in Houston and continue to do so in Austin. What a conversation piece this heirloom plant is

Does it actually produce seeds that can germinate and grow, or is it a "eunuch"?

I've never seen seed. It propagates easily from cuttings.

It's a real curiosity piece:

I don't know where you might be able to find one,
perhaps ask a local nursery to check with their supplier?

Most interesting.. Wonder if had pollen since it never evolves into a formal flower.. It it doesn't have pollen, it would prefect for pollen allergy sufferers..

TalkingI love green flowers!

That is neat! I love green flowers. I tried growing some green zinnias once. I just saw a plant called King's spear with green flowers. I'd also like to find the Stapelia that flowers green-even if I'd have to view the flower with a closepin on my nose!

I had a few of the greenish color tulip this spring, its different. I bet I could find out where Hershey garden got them, if I new which garden they were at and saw them there is a nursery in Hershey that does all the major places, they don't sell retail, but I could see where they came from. I need to no was it hotel hershey garden, hershey motor lodge convention ctr? I am about 20 mins. from Hershey.
