Thumbs upHow to find your USDA zone

The USDA Plant Hardiness Zone Map helps you determine the average minimal temperature range for the area where you live. This can help you determine if a certain plant is a good fit for your garden (or likely to die in the winter without special care).

If you look up the zone you live in, please add it to the location field in your profile so that other members will have a proper perspective when you talk about how your plants are doing.

Hi Denise, welcome to Plant Swap.
I believe that Golden is in USDA zone 4 and Johnstown is 5B.

I'm not quite sure if I understand your question about fertilizing,
but here in my garden, I usually do not do springtime fertilizing
until my plants have already been up and growing for several weeks.
I wait until I am absolutely certain that there will NOT be any further cold damage ...
... and then I wait another week or two.

There is usually good info on the fertilizer package recommending how to get the best results from their product.

Heat zone info.

Just some more information on your area.
The American Horticulturial Society has a downloadable heat zone map at this site that can be just as important as the plant zone map .
Some plants can not survive extreme heat as well as cold . Also each planting zone has mini-climates within the zone .
Check it out at : www.ahs.org/pdfs/heatmap.pdf .
It can help in showing if you are in a special area of your zone.
Happy gardening,
Bill
