Do it yourself greenhouse using cattle panelsCattle panels are very thick galvanized wire that can be used in many creative ways. As far as I know they won't rust and they are perfect for trellis and in this case a nice greenhouse. Here are some pictures of what the goat panel looks like, I used this one for a bean trellis. The cattle panel is similar but the open squares are smaller. ![]() ![]() On to the greenhouse construction~I picked this spot because I want to lean the panel up against the wall of this shed and because it gets some nice sun. At this point I am getting the foundation ready and making a nice raised bed for some callas I am growing, hoping they will bloom in time for my daughters wedding the first of June. ![]() |

| Starting to lay the gravel floor, Piedmont (pee~mon) is helping~we have a gravel driveway and I just moved some of the gravel from there to where I want it. I use old plastic mulch bags and stuff under the gravel to keep grass from growing. In this project I am trying to not buy much. ![]() At this point the calla bed is more of a pond~the rocks I found on the mountain ![]() Working on the gravel floor~ ![]() At this point you can see how I have laid the cattle panels up against the side of the shed. We had to do some minor construction at the front and build a simple door. I am also laying the plastic sheeting over the top. I am also using extra wire fencing we had left over a a support for the plastic on the front. |

| Here is a closeup of the front. I just cut the wire to the shape I need it and tack it to the wood and wire it to the cattle panel ![]() ![]() Plastic cover finished~this is 6mm that I got from lowes. It will only last a few years but I have other ideas of what I want to cover it with in the future. For now its cheap and good enough. ![]() This was my first attempt to get the plastic from flapping around. But the rope was not big enough. I have since revised it. ![]() Here is a picture of the inside before I put the bubble wrap insulation up~ ![]() |

| Next I bought roll of bubble wrap, I could not find the wide width tho at a price I wanted to pay at this point so I both taped and sewed the lengths together and also tied different areas to the wire to keep it from flapping around. But you get the basic idea. It's not beautiful, but so far so good it's working!! ![]() Pretty much finished now~I will be working on the area around the greenhouse next, its got to be fenced off from the dog love and I will be putting in another veggie garden~ ![]() ![]() Piedmont and Gunthor trying to be helpful~ ![]() I had an old shelving unit I just covered it in heavy plastic and put it up on the wall~ ![]() The fencepost is perfect for my hanging baskets that need to stay warm~ ![]() Callas planted and starting some seeds~this calla was inside for winter and seems to like the pot~ ![]() ![]() Gave the passies something to climb and the lotus is doing great~I've got a small heater with a fan in it and that with the sun this greenhouse is staying nice and warm. ![]() Big lug Gunthor checking it out~ |

| Thanks RR, this year I just wanted to get a few months jump on the season and at this point I am starting seeds under the lights in the greenroom and will move them out to the greenhouse as they get big enough. No the plastic is pretty sturdy, the duct tape is ok, and I am just using it to tape the edges of the bubble wrap together, but not a perfect solution. I may break down and buy some greenhouse tape. I did start some lettuce seeds out there, the temps are staying between 50 to eighty degrees. I figure as it warms up enough in the spring I will roll up some of the sheeting to let some cooler air in. We've been thru some heavy wind and rain storms and so far so good! | Nice job - if only I had that kind of ambition. I may just have to push myself some to get my plants started.

| Thanks guys! I am actually surprised it works as well as it does. Next year I want to work on getting rid of the plastic and covering it with those flexable hard clear greenhouse panels. I figure I will just by one or two at a time thru summer as they run about 25 to 30 bucks each. Then by fall I should have enough to cover the greenhouse and the wire will give it the needed support. I use the gravel and rocks because they will absorb the heat during the day and slowly release it at night. Also, I am afraid that any mulch would just grow mold, but I may be wrong as I have never done this before. The last reasons are that having the electric heater out there I feel safer having it on the gravel and the gravel was here so I didn't have to buy any extra. |
