I am in zone 5, we have winter . To ease the burden of germinationg seeds, and rooting cuttings.
Indoors I have used for 3 years.....A large lid off a plastic box, with a layer of sand, and a heating cable and hardware wire. Commercial soil on top.
Keeps the mess in one spot....In the cool months I plug in the heating cable.
Warm months I dont. I Just keep it moist and add seeds or cuttings, and root them as easy as pie...Most things work , some do not. Africian violet leaves root like majic.....I dont even use the rootone.....
I find it cheap and thrifty...Start all my tomatoes inside and peppers and lotza flower seeds.
I could not get peppers to germinate at all, till I tryed the heating cable.
The cable gives you the directions of how to set it up.. I just have my lid on an old sewing machine cabinet.
Boy did my brother laugh when he seen my invention.lol
They laugh but love it .
I make a couple of pots full for his wife each year and they grow them till frost.
He is elated that he can do it.. So is she . I taught them to catch rain water off the garage spout for the watering .
They have a huge bill in town.. I am country .
