Thumbs upPond algae near gone

Just wanted to let everyone know I recieved algae remover from pond market .Used one application so far and it completely removed the the algae from the waterfall and any of the rocks that were above the waterline.I turned the pump off sprinkled it on waterfall and the exposed rocks that had algae and then gently hosed them off and scooped it up so the dead algae wouldn't run into the pond . Now i an waiting to see if it kills the algae under the water ! My fish are fine ,,, SO far I'm impressed ! Thanks to gary . The product is (darn left it outside LOL ) " ReStor " from pondmarket.com .

I have heard such good things about this product. I am itching to try it also but I have baby fish in the pond right now and they use the algea to hide in. So, I have to wait a bit before I can use it. I am so glad someone else on here tried the product though. I cant wait to get rid of that algea. I dont much like it. Way to go!!

Questionbaby fish

Good morning,,, I'm wondering how you keep your baby fish safe from your larger ones ? I started with 15 fish, they had babies 2 years ago,so now i have about 60 in total. Last year they had babies and only six survived the feeding frenzy . There was no way we could catch the babies quick enough .So far this year there havent' been babies , at least that we've seen !I know that sounds disgusting and I was kinda ticked off at the larger ones for a few days ! Norene

Yes, they will eat the babies with a quickness. Out of our koi we only ended up with about 6 out of what must have been hundreds last year. I make sure not to disturb the algea when theres babies in the pond and also try to provide as many plants as I can to give them somewhere to hide from the larger fish. But not many koi survive. Now the goldfish on the other hand, we get over run with their babies. We are going to set up a tank just for the gold fish babies this year and try to give them away on freecycle. We just get way too many of them. I dont know how so many of them survive and only a few of the koi make it. The eating of the babies is just the way of nature, survival of the fittest. I know it sounds disgusting but that's the way it is for baby fish. We cant keep all the babies from the goldfish, our pond would be quickly over run by them. So, I'm hoping the freecycle ad will draw people in to take them and give them a chance to survive. We already have about 30 in my husbands tank inside but they need to go because that tank is supposed to hold the koi babies for their first year, then they go out to the pond. I really dont have any kind of sure fire method for saving the babies, it just happens that way. Not sure I can give you too much advice on it. It seems to me that if they had babies one year and you still have the same fish in the pond the next year, they should have had babies again. I think the goldfish breed early in their lives but the koi have to be a certain age to breed. I cant remember how old they need to be right at the moment but just as a guess, I would say 2 or 3 years old? Someone may need to correct me on that one. I just have the darnedest luck with animals having babies. Seems every animal I have has babies. Even bought a snake once that was pregnant and had babies. Bought one snake and ended up with 10 or 15, something like that. I just remember it was a bunch!!!!!!

The best way that I have found to see if theres babies in the pond is to go out there at night with a very bright light and shine it into the pond. You can see really well in there like that. Since mine have shade alot of the day its hard to see with the shadow of the tree on the pond. I know our neighbors think we are crazy out there at night with that big light shining it in our pond but I dont mind if they think that. At least I can check on the babies!!

Thanks for the information, everything helps : )... Sad to say I dont' have koi only goldfish ,Koi are hard to come by around here .There is a small business that opened up this summer and they have some but wont' be selling till next summer IF they have babies. They have about 10 of them . They are new to the pond stuff so I've been sugesting what items they should bring in, maybe that will net me some free koi LOL .They are also selling water liles ,bought two of them and this morn i can see buds above the water .

We have another method of getting rid of algae here in Arkansas....go get a Buffalo Carp(or green carp as they are sometimes called)! These things will eat their weight in algae every week....caught one that weight 22lbs last year and put it in a local pond that has a serious problem. That pond is clear this year, and the carp have multiplied(wonder if someone caught him a girlfriend).

I'll keep that product in mind(or notepad) for whenever the time comes that I get started on my pond/waterfall.

Scott (I don't eat those fish...yuck) B
