stick the bottom end in some cactus mix and leave it alone for a week and then after a week give it a SMALL drink. Then leave it alone for 2 weeks and then give it a normal drink and every 2 weeks after that. This is a mamillaria cactus and dones not take a lot of water. This one grows a lot of branches like the one you got, they break off easy and root very easy.

ok awesome thanks for the advice!! I planted it a week ago today so ill give it its first drink! now i live in Illinois and its winter time this year its not to cold its been mostly 40s. But my question is what kind of sun exposure can this little guy take? Should i have him in partial shade or in the sunniest place in the house?

Thank you Zuzu, hugs buddy great to see you too.

drake I would give this little guy the nicest sunny location you can and wait and watch it grow and bloom for you..no need for plant food of any kind and remember only water every 2 weeks..in winter especially you do not want to water cactus to much.
