Growing Hens & Chicks from Seed

I got my hands on some Sempervivum seeds. I only have about 30, dust like seeds, but am wanting to try my hand at germinating them.

Can someone give me some advice as far as how to achieve the best germination rates. Do you have any tricks or secrets to get good results?

Yep, probably much easier to just get a hen, or chick to start with.

MP - is the seed a mixed variety or all one kind? Just wandering

It's a mixed variety.

So far, it's seeds 0, hen plant 2..... is it really that challenging to start from seed? I so imagine it would take a long time to get a decent size plant.... but I'd like to try!

Hey Gardners!! seeds come from where they all come from, The FLOWER stalk!!! LOL
MP just sprinkle on top of your soil, you can press into the soil but don't cover too deep.
does need light to germinate and keep moist until they get to growing . does take about a year to get a fair size. You are better off getting plants for sure tho,

Callanh,

How is it best to keep the soil moist, without disturbing it too much? (I'd hate for these tiny seeds to get buried when I water). Do you mist with a spray? Would drops from the sprinkler system be to harsh to water?

Do I need a greenhouse effect, like putting a bag over them to keep it humid?

MP cliff gave you great advice on growing from seed...to keep them moist just mist them with a spray bottle.

It is easier with a plant sure but from seed you will get to see it go through all stages of growth and if it is a mixed seed batch who knows what great kinds you may get A year really is not that long to grow things..shoot I have things I been growing 6 months and they are tiny still but it is great seeing the stages an progresses..and I bet Lizzie would love to watch them grow with you

Thanks RR.

What's the best kind of soil combination? I'd rather not have to go out and buy a cacti soil mix. If I can make a combination myself, I'd rather do that!

Denise you can use a good potting soil mixed with perilite and it will be fine to start the seeds in. I look foward to seeing how it goes for you.
